The Sutcliffe Coat of Arms

image © 2003

These arms date to the reign of Edward V. The description is: Argent: an elephant passant sable. Of course the arms consist only of the shield and its contents. The helm and other accoutrements are embellishments and can vary substantially from one rendering to another. Another rendering is pictured here. The motto Foy en tout literally means "Faith in all" but probably should be rendered as "In all, have faith."

Mt 21:21 Jesus replied, "I tell you the truth, if you have faith and do not doubt, not only can you do what was done to the fig-tree, but also you can say to this mountain, 'Go, throw yourself into the sea,' and it will be done.
Heb 11:1 Now faith is being sure of what we hope for and certain of what we do not see.
Eph 2:8 For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith--and this not from yourselves, it is the gift of God--not by works, so that no-one can boast. For we are God's workmanship, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.
